11+ vocabulary for multilingual families

You do not need to stop using your home language to help with English vocabulary. Use the language that lets your family discuss an idea clearly, then return to the English word and its use in a sentence.

A small step for today

Understand the idea together; finish with an English sentence your child can explain.

01

Begin with the idea, not a literal translation

For integrity, talk about someone returning a lost wallet even when nobody is watching. Your child may already understand that idea in another language. Link it to the English word, and avoid treating one translated word as a complete definition.

02

Keep a bridge back to English

Listen to the English word and example. Discuss the meaning in your preferred language, then ask your child to retell the example in English. A short spoken sentence is enough at first; gradually add reading and written examples.

03

Notice meanings that do not line up neatly

One English word can have several meanings. Environment can mean the natural world or the conditions in a classroom. Read the full English sentence before choosing a translation. Ask which meaning fits this particular context.

04

Give both languages a place

Keep enjoyable family stories and conversations in your home language. Add manageable English reading and vocabulary practice rather than replacing them. The site offers English plus Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean support; it does not replace your school’s advice.

Try this together

Talk about a friendly character in your home language. Introduce sociable, then ask your child to describe that character in one English sentence.

See an example answer

‘Maya is sociable because she enjoys chatting with new classmates.’ Discuss what in the story supports that description, in either language.
