Free 11+ vocabulary practice: try real words

Try the three word cards below before creating an account. They use words verified in our free starter library, with original examples written for this guide. Listen, explain the meaning and answer the short question.

A small step for today

No sign-in is needed for the examples on this page. A free account opens the 30-word starter library.

01

Try one word properly

Press Listen on adjacent. Read the example, then point to two things next to each other. Close your eyes and explain the word in your own words. If your device cannot play speech, a parent can read the word and sentence aloud.

02

Compare two different meanings

Sociable describes someone who enjoys being with other people. Futile describes an effort unlikely to achieve its purpose. Imagine a sociable child inviting classmates to play; imagine trying to stop rain by shouting at the clouds. Discuss why the second effort is futile.

03

What the free account includes

Registration provides 30 starter words and repeat learning and practice within that library. These are a starter set, not 30 new words each day. Seeing the full word list does not unlock every word; words outside free access require Premium.

04

Keep the first session short

Learn one or two words, then revisit them tomorrow. Ask your child to invent an example rather than rush through every card. These examples support general vocabulary development; no list guarantees the words that will appear in a particular school’s test.

Try this together

Choose one card below. Say its meaning without looking, then tell a new story that uses the word. Which part was easier: recognising it or explaining it?

For futile: ‘Trying to fill a bucket with a large hole is futile because the water escapes.’ An accurate idea matters more than matching our sentence.
